Promoting a Healthy Lifestyle

Maintaining a healthy existence requires good daily routines and habits. While genetics can play a role in increasing your risk of certain diseases and make it harder to lose weight, there are other factors that can increase or reduce your chances of acquiring them.

Oral Hygiene

Your mouth plays more of a role in your health than you probably realize. Brushing and flossing regularly can keep it healthy. As a result, you will reduce your chances of having cavities and plaque build-up on the gums. When you don’t properly care for your teeth and gums you can increase your chances of not only expensive dental procedures like a root canal but also serious diseases like diabetes and heart disease.

Benefits of Fruits and Vegetables

If you want to feel good and maintain a healthy weight eating your fruit and vegetables is essential. The super vegetables such as broccoli, kale, spinach and carrots provide your body with an abundance of body essential vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Foods high in fiber also keep your digestive system functioning properly helping you sustain a healthy weight and reduce your risk of heart disease.

Eliminating the Bad

Smoking, over drinking and abusing drugs can all have a negative impact on your overall health. Smoking cigarettes is very dangerous. And, even if you are a light to moderate smoker consuming less than a pack a day, you are still at risk for many diseases and cancers. Drinking on occasion to celebrate an event or a milestone is fine. However, when you kick it up a notch and start to drink daily, it can cause stomach ulcers and more serious problems like liver damage.

Prescription drugs seem to be the new bad habit of choice, growing rapidly in the number of people with addictions to them. Having an addiction to any one of these can alter your life negatively and put you at risk for serious, and sometimes, life-threatening diseases. The good news is that if you want to eliminate your bad habit, you can. It will require strength and commitment, along with a good support team. If you feel that you can’t recover on your own at home, there are facilities that provide drug and alcohol detox treatment to get you started.

Stress

People who look good and feel good not only eat well and get plenty of rest, they also handle stress well. While there’s no way to avoid stress completely, you can learn how to control it. If you often feel stressed at work because you have too much to do at once, learn how to delegate the duties. The same goes for your home. If you do most everything, learn how to let others help. Downtime is critical to preventing stress from taking over your daily life. Make sure to dedicate one day a month just for you and your interests and take a vacation at least once a year.

A Good Night’s Sleep

You may go to bed at a certain time, however, the question is do you fall asleep? Many people struggle with getting enough rest. Anxiety and stress can keep your mind alive and active preventing you from falling asleep. One hour before your bedtime, turn off the news and put the caffeine down. A hot relaxing bath with calming oils like lavender and chamomile can also help to put your body in a state of rest prior to climbing into bed.

Your health matters. And, thankfully, for the most part, you control how healthy you are. Following a daily routine that includes good foods, oral hygiene and the proper amount of sleep are just a few steps in the right direction to improved health.
