jillian michaels: banish fat, boost metabolism.

Insanity, meet 30 Day Shred.

Banish Fat, Boost Metabolism is about 40 minutes long, and it consists of 7 different series. It’s all about a mixture of cardio and strength training, and there is no equipment required. In a lot of ways, I prefer this to Insanity because it does provide that strength kick whereas I feel like Insanity moreso focuses on cardio only. When I do Insanity, I’m dying – I can’t breathe, I’m about to black out – but I’m not usually feeling sore the next day. With this DVD, I get the soreness factor that makes me feel my muscles got a run for their money.

A couple of the series are mostly kickboxing, which I love. The cardio-heavy series do remind me of Insanity, though I must say that Insanity is much more…well, insane. Jillian also provides a lot of good core work here, of course. Each set does get harder as the video goes on, which I like; I’d say the sixth and seventh are the hardest. One of the last series finishes with the high-knees/mountain climbers, which I know all too well from Shaun T – but you should be able to get through it without passing out. Call it a happy medium.

All in all, I think this is a great DVD for those who are curious about Insanity but don’t want to fork over the $100+ for the entire DVD set. Also, if you think your body responds well to crazy-intense cardio, then this DVD may give you a taste of that and you may decide you want more and invest in Insanity.

Personally, my body likes the mix, but I know I get the best results from a heavy dose of strength training. Next time, we’ll be discussing my all-time favorite Jillian DVD, “No More Trouble Zones” – which really focuses in on just that.

crunch dvd series: pilates yoga blend.

I just realized I haven’t posted on anything exercise related since the end of April. I guess this only mimics what’s been going on in real-life.

Oops.

It’s not to say that I haven’t been working out at all – just less. And when I say less, I mean I went from about 6 days a week to…one.

You’ll be glad to know that I’m getting back on my horse.

{And when I say that, I mean I’m going for about 3-4 days a week}

One of the the things I’m really getting into is doing more pilates and yoga. This DVD from the Crunch series is actually referred to as a pilates/yoga blend, which I love. I have another Crunch version that’s strictly pilates, and I will review it at some point, but I’m not as big of a fan.

This workout is about 40 minutes long, consisting of several series of standing yoga poses, followed by pilates and then ab work. Each series is repeated a few times, which is nice because it’s enough to feel like you’re getting somewhere within each move, yet you can’t really get bored. I particularly love the way the each of the moves flows together.

It’s not a crazy intense workout (à la Insanity), but that should be pretty obvious. I like the idea of keeping the intensity of my workouts varied – for me, this is the perfect DVD to throw in once a week to mix things up. You don’t need any equipment – just a mat if you’re on a hard surface – and as with any pilates or yoga workouts, no sneakers involved. Love that.

I’ve also noticed that the more I concentrate on  holding a pose and really focusing on tightening my abs or another muscle, the better the results. When I first did this DVD, I didn’t break much of a sweat, but as I’ve done it more and been able to focus on each move in a deeper way, I’ve found it to be a better workout. The more I do this DVD, the more I appreciate each of the moves and what they offer.

All in all, this is a workout I can always count on to look forward to – which I think is pretty difficult to find.

Are YOU into pilates or yoga DVDs? Which is your favorite?

my {first} date with jillian michaels.

Yep, it’s true.

This morning I cheated on Shaun T.

{I have to say – I’m a little jealous if you don’t know who he is. That would mean that you don’t currently torture yourself multiple times a week doing his totes insane workouts, like I do}

Just kidding, Shaun T. Kind of.

You may or may not know that right now I’m in the midst of working out like a pycho more than usual. For me, that means, like, 4 or 5 times a week. Lately I’ve been working late hours at the office, so this means I’m squeezing in my morning dates with Shaun T at 6am roughly 3 or 4 times a week, and then – if things go right – going for a nice long 4-5 mile run on the weekend.

I should probably also tell you that I’m only on my second week of this schedule.

That’s okay though – because I know I’m going to keep it up. Why, you ask? Well, for one simple reason: I have a goal. Not a goal of like, I want to lose 5 pounds. Which, of course, I do. {Don’t we all?} But that never seems to keep my hand out of the cookie jar for long. What I’m talking about here is an event-based goal – which for me, seems to be the only thing that really gets me going. This could be a wedding, a reunion of some type, or any other big event that requires you to be at the top of your game. For me, it’s a photo shoot.

A huge component when it comes to seeing change in your physique is variety; you always want to shock your body, and you never want it to know what’s next. And yes, it also helps ward off the boredom factor. So, this morning I decided it was time to walk over to the little stack of {unopened} workout DVDs on the floor and give Jillian a try.

The Skinny:

The DVD is made up of three workouts: Levels 1, 2, and 3. I was still sore from doing the Insanity “Recovery” DVD yesterday morning (yeah, I know, I don’t get it either), so I went with Level 1. And it’s definitely wise to start there – it was pretty intense! Each workout is only 20 minutes long, so it was about half the time I’m used to doing with the Insanity DVDs, but it was still a solid workout. Each one is comprised of rotations of 3 minutes of strength moves, 2 minutes of cardio, and 1 minute of abs. This is *the* recipe for weight loss, ladies. If someone tells you it’s okay to just do cardio – stop listening immediately. They don’t know anything. (What you eat, however, is the single most important piece of the puzzle – for more on that, click here.)

There are no breaks at all in between, so you’re constantly moving the entire time. Think of it this way – you could spend over an hour at the gym, but between chatting, drinking water, resting between sets, texting, etc. – how much time are you really working it?

What I like:

  • Short and sweet – I mean, who can’t find the time to wake up just 20 minutes earlier?
  • Minimal equipment needed – just a pair of dumbbells (mine are 5 pounds, I think) and a mat if you’re on a hard surface.
  • Good strength moves – my upper body is unusually weak, so the weights used here were a nice addition.
  • Totally reasonably priced – you can get it for less than $10 here.

The final verdict –> Shaun T is still my #1, but I will definitely be seeing Jillian again.

What do you think, ladies? Would you give Jillian a try – or better yet, have you already? Are there any other workout DVDs you swear by? I’m also looking to get into some yoga and pilates, so I’d love to know if you have any recommendations.

insanity.

Mirror mirror, on the wall…who’s the most insane of all?

I can’t tell if it’s the guy who leads these workouts or me for actually doing them.

True story: I almost blacked out trying to do one of these DVD’s the other day on an empty stomach.

{Don’t worry – I’ve since started force feeding myself half a banana beforehand to prevent anything dangerous from happening}

The title tells it like it is – no sugar coating, pretties. It’s insane. One of the reasons I’m so into it is because it brings those bootcamp workouts they do at gyms into your own home (like those ridiculous classes I used to do at Sports Club, LA – you know when all of the personal trainers are doing the same workout as you, it’s good). Even better, you don’t need any other equipment or weights.

Lately I am really into the workout DVDs at home, particularly because I *finally* convinced Daniel (love you, honey) to do some furniture rearranging/donating in our second bedroom so I could have enough room do them. Now I have my own little workout studio, and I’m kind of obsessed with it.

The DVDs are meant to be done almost everyday, in a specific plan that promises to deliver ridiculous results. I, personally, find this a little…well, insane. Instead I have opted to do it 2-3 times a week (okay, more like 1-2 times a week) and so far I am really happy with it. The first time I did it, I was SO sore the next day, and now depending on which video I do, I still get pretty sore (I’ve still only done it 4-5 times total so far). I love to complain about it, but the truth is I like to be sore and I don’t feel like I got a good workout unless I’m waddling around like a penguin.

Is that weird?

Either way, I totally recommend this workout. Two of my friends have already purchased this set after listening to me obsess over it, and I see that number increasing. Yes, it’s a bit pricey (you can get it for about $130 on Amazon and maybe cheaper on Ebay) but I think it’s worth it. You’re getting a ton of workouts that you will get a lot of mileage on, and it even comes with a meal plan (which I have looked at, and is pretty good – even if it’s a bit unrealistic). All in all, it will help you switch up your workouts, which is always a good thing – both for weight loss and preventing boredom. And if you do have a certain goal you are working toward (hello, brides-to-be, and oh, hi there, bikini season) – then following the complete plan will most likely get you there.

Which is more than I can say for lemon juice/cayenne pepper/maple syrup diets and body wraps.
