Archives For The World Is Not Flat

I’m realizing that I live in a place where some of you may like to vacation.

I’m not saying this to rub it in like a jerk, but rather – I’m saying I should probably be spreading the word about places you might want to see or visit while you’re here. Plus, I know after writing about my favorite restaurant in Fort Lauderdale that at least a few of you live in this general vicinity and might take pleasure in a little weekend getaway on occasion.

Because really, this is one of my favorite things about living where we live. Miami (and its world-famous South Beach) is just 30 minutes away, which I love because even though I love Miami, I prefer to live on the quieter side of town that is Fort Lauderdale. It’s a more relaxed, low-key way of life – yet just a quick drive away from many of the best hotels, restaurants, and nightlife in the country.

pike place market

I recently traveled to Seattle for a long weekend to attend a food blogger conference. Although I didn’t have as much time as I would have liked to explore this fabulous city, I did get to check out a few great spots … and I also learned a lot by way of recommendations (many from some of you, who gave me lots of rad ideas via Facebook - thank you!) and a little of my own research.

{Check out more photos from the trip here}

Here, I share my experiences with you, for your own future travels … or in case you simply want to learn a little about a place you’ve never been. Happy pseudo-traveling!

I suppose there’s more to Louisville than just bourbon.

21c Museum Hotel, Louisville

{from left: debi, paula, moi, irvin, brian, maggy}

To start, there’s the ridiculously rad 21c Museum Hotel, where all of the lovely photos in this post were taken (see the rest here). What a concept! It’s a hotel with a contemporary art museum built right in. Great bar, fabulous cocktails (I had a lavender-infused gin concoction that I fell in love with) and, yes – lots of funky art. The fashion-geek inside of me lusted over the dining room, its walls lined with the most fantastic images of luxury-branded car interiors.

Also, there just so happens to be … soy sauce! I bet you’re surprised to hear that. Not just any old soy sauce, mind you, but the only micro-brewed soy sauce in America. Soy sauce that’s made by hand, in a big warehouse … in – here’s the part that really gets my heart racing – Woodford Reserve bourbon barrels.

I mean, seriously … how cool is that?

And what’s even cooler is that GE Monogram made it all happen. I truly feel honored and blessed to have been invited along with such a talented (and awesome!) group of food bloggers. All expenses paid, GE Monogram planned this trip so that we could visit their “Experience Center” – and discover all of these other fun things Louisville has to offer.

Important things. Such as, “bourbon ice.” Yes, bourbon ice is a real thing. GE Monogram makes an ice dispenser that produces it, so they would know. It’s that super-clean and clear ice that comes in perfect little cubes … the kind you can drop into your glass of high-roller bourbon and not taint it with any crusty, funky-smelling situation that might be lingering in your freezer. (The non-Bourbon ice I rock at home is the precise reason why I typically go ice-less when I’m drinking water.)

Really, it has nothing to do with bourbon, but when you’re in Louisville … bourbon is EVERYTHING.

the FL keys: cheeca lodge.

Welcome to my new favorite place.

The Florida Keys are just a hop, skip, and a jump away from us here in South Florida. And I’ve full-on decided that this is my favorite resort on Islamorada, my new favorite Key.

I swear to you that I’ve never been more relaxed in my entire life than I was on this weekend getaway. There is something in the stillness of the air that makes you feel you’re a world away from South Florida.

Perhaps it was the cocktails? Those agave margaritas pictured above were my favorite, and they were also the first drink we ordered upon arrival. I think Daniel and I have an unwritten rule that vacay doesn’t officially begin until a margarita has hit the lips.

And we all know I love a place with a great specialty cocktail menu. Also topping the list:  frozen coconut margaritas (I know it sounds strange, but it *totally* works).

How bad can it be when this is what you’re staring at from the bar as you drink delicious cocktails all afternoon? Or, all morning. That’s how we roll.

{The photos don’t do it justice – but stayed tuned, for that’s all about to change as soon as my new + improved camera arrives!}

The entire resort is right on the ocean, which is part of the whole relaxation effect.

It’s also a great place for photo ops. Whether you want to be goofy…

Or cute. Pick your poison. I see it as the perfect place to rock my ginormous derby hat.

Just make sure that on your way {if you’re driving, that is} down, you stop at the Key Largo Conch House for breakfast. It’s the best. Conch benedict. Fried conch + eggs benedict. It’s only my favorite breakfast of all time, duh.

Not to mention all of the delicious food you’ll get at the hotel bar, which is another huge-selling point for me. The fish sandwich was probably our favorite. It was the ultimate mish-mash of fresh flavors and complimentary textures. Perfection. But then again, we really loved this flatbread. It was so perfectly crisp, and there were several amazing versions available – our favorite was this spicy one topped with shrimp. And we can’t forget the conch fritters. I always have to order them when I’m on vacation, and these were honestly some of the best I’ve ever had – the crunch-factor was unbelievable.

You can’t even consider not trying the crazy-good sushi place the hotel has to offer. I am a huge sushi fan – it’s one of those things I always get a craving for. I’m so glad we tried it:  the quality of the sushi was amazing, and I absolutely fell in love with this place. You can sit outside at this low table with a couch, overlooking the bar area and ocean. It’s so beyond perfect, and you know we got our fix of unfiltered sake {our fave} while we were there – how cute is this serving bottle? There’s ice right in the center of the mini bottle to keep it cold. Love.

If you go, you *must* try the truffled escolar. It was honestly one of the best things I’ve ever eaten. You can opt for tuna instead of escolar, which I’m sure is equally amazing, but try the escolar if you’ve never had it. I’d never even heard of it, and in case you haven’t either, it’s a buttery, succulent white fish that you’re pretty much guaranteed to like.

There are also a ton of fabulous mom-and-pop eating options within about a mile on either side of the resort, which is what I love most about Islamorada in general. Bob’s Bunz is right across the street, and it’s a must for both the – you guessed it – cinnamon buns and all-around delicious homemade breakfasts. Daniel had this crazy egg/bacon/sausage/cheese/potato skillet that’s also a must-try.

Lazy Days was another favorite nearby restaurant. We ate right on the ocean, right at sunset – it was so gorgeous, relaxing, and perfect. This dish was my personal favorite:  the hogfish served “Lazy” style. This is something I’ve had before on trips to other parts of the Keys, and it’s absolutely delicious. It’s this buttery, cheesy, key-limey masterpiece of a sauce with tons of scallions and tons of flavor.

After dinner that night, we headed across the street from our resort to Pierre’s/Morada Bay for the famous Full Moon Party. It’s basically two restaurants right on the beach next door to one another, and every time there’s a full moon they throw a huge party on the sand. There are live bands, lots of drinks and food, flame throwers, fun jugglers on stilts as pictured, etc. My favorite part? The drinks. They had two punches – a red and a blue – served in mason jars with glowsticks inside. How fun is that? They were super-sugary, which is usually not my favorite, but as they say – when in Rome…

The best part of the night was when we went inside the bar area at Pierre’s where there was a great dance party getting started {read:  people-watching at its finest}. But then, it got even better:  this awesome band came though the bar – tubas, saxophones, drums, the whole nine – and put on this crazy performance. The entire area was packed, the music was shaking the room, we were all covered in sweat…

It was fun. Possibly, too much fun.

On our last full day in Islamorada, we went to the world-famous Tiki Bar. This place has over the years become the number one stop for anyone driving down to Key West, or usually and perhaps more accurately, those driving back from Key West. Islamorada is basically the halfway point from the mainland to Key West, so it’s the perfect place to stop for a drink after a crazy weekend away. You know, for a pick-me-up.

For us, it was the perfect place to enjoy extra-chilled Patron shots after a long day of sweet tea vodka on the rocks.

So, yeah. I kinda want to go back. Like, this weekend.

Or move there. Whatever.

Last night I was in the office until 9pm. The night before, it was after 7pm. I’m not sure how long I will be here tonight, but I do know what I’ll be fantasizing about.

Being here.

Maybe I will begin the day with an early morning yoga session.

Or perhaps I’ll just stay in bed.

And have breakfast al fresco a bit later.

Then, I’ll lounge the day away in the sun.

Followed by a seaside lunch.

A massage will definitely be in order.

And we’ll finish the evening with a romantic {private} dinner for two.

Sounds like a plan, doesn’t it? Bali is number one on my list of dream vacation spots, and it’s also very high on our list of possible honeymoon destinations. It’s tropical, which is an absolute must for Daniel and I when it comes to our ideal vacay – but it also has such an amazing cultural and spiritual side; it’s truly unlike any other place in the world. This particular Four Seasons Resort has everything I could ever want – from the most perfect private villas to beachside spa treatments and cooking classes.

The Balinese also believe in a much more simple and serene way of life.

{Which I could surely use right about now}

Here’s to a perfectly relaxing + beautiful weekend, lovelies!

I’m not sure what you’re planning on doing this weekend, but I do know this.

Whatever it is, it will be exponentially better if you do it {before, during, or after} drinking these frozen cocktails of perfection.

One of Daniel and I’s favorite places is without a doubt the island of St. John. It’s right off the coast of St. Thomas, so you can easily take a ferry from there. We stopped at here on a cruise last year for my birthday (you can see a couple of photos and read our delicious love story here).

We love St. John for many reasons.

One, being:

Another, being:

Allow me to introduce you to Woody’s Seafood Saloon. We ended up here after asking a local where we could find great food and drinks, and we are eternally grateful for his recommendation.

{This, by the way, is the best thing you can do when you’re anywhere foreign. Locals always know best}

Woody’s is just a walk from the beach, and it’s about as authentic as it gets. Here you can find the most delicious tropical cocktails you’ve ever tasted, and the perfect selection of tropical-island-inspired seafood and appetizers. We were particularly obsessed with their conch fritters and the most outrageous drink I’ve ever had…

You guessed it – that of the frozen coconut and lime variety.

I’m a huge coconut fan, so I love pretty much every drink involving it – but this…something about it was extraordinary. It was beyond refreshing, but it had such a kick to it – the flavors practically burst inside your mouth. I could never seem to get that frozen creation out of my mind. And there’s really only one logical thing to do in this situation.

Move to St. John so you can enjoy them on a daily basis.

And if that doesn’t work out, you can always try and make up your own version at home. That’s precisely what I did a couple of weeks ago when we had friends over for a little Sunday Funday. I really had no idea what they put in the Woody’s original, but I knew it involved coconut, lime, and rum.

So, I winged it. And this is what I came up with.

DSC02404.JPG

Coconut-Lime Coolers

Yield: 1 pitcher

  • 2 cups coconut rum
  • 3 scoops lime sherbet
  • 3/4 cup fresh-squeezed lime juice
  • 3/4 cup coconut water
  • Sprinkle of lime zest
Fill blender pitcher over halfway with ice. Add the first 4 ingredients and blend away. At this point, you can add more or less of anything according to your taste. Garnish with fresh lime zest.
I really have no idea if they use lime sherbet over at Woody’s. My guess is that they don’t – but I won’t the answer until I go back. Either way, it adds an unbelievably delicious creaminess to the drink – almost like a coconut-lime version of a creamsicle.
