avocado-basil dressing.

I bet you’re looking for something to serve with those mango margaritas.

IMG_2021.jpg

How about a 5-ingredient beer shrimp boil, sinful lemony artichokes au gratin, and this green salad with a super-easy avocado-basil dressing?

{Recipes to come!}

I’m always looking for another use for that last lonely avocado, and that’s how this dressing came to be. I love the flavor of basil with avocado, and so the idea to put them together for this dressing was a no-brainer. It’s so summery and fresh-tasting, but it’s also rich and creamy from the avocado. I almost always serve a simple green salad to balance out a meal, so I’m constantly on the look-out for new dressing ideas.

Because sometimes, I just can’t bare the thought of yet-another vinaigrette.

Avocado-Basil Dressing

  • 1 avocado
  • Handful fresh basil leaves
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tablespoon minced fresh garlic
  • Squeeze of fresh lemon juice
  • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • Olive oil

Combine all ingredients in a food processor. Add olive oil in a slow stream until you reach desired consistency. You can also thin the dressing with water, if you’re looking to cut calories.

Makes about 1 cup of dressing.

the perfect {last-minute} NYE accessory.

With less than 2 days until New Year’s Eve, I won’t tempt you with any gorgeous dresses or irresistibly sparkly shoes.

{Although – there is always overnight shipping}

This little treat comes in with a much lower price tag, and best of all – it’s entirely manageable for Friday. In fact, I’d put money on the fact that you’re likely already paying a visit to the nail salon in the next day or two. You won’t find me there, of course, because last week I (finally!) tried the new gel nail polish everyone has been raving about.

There are several different brands, but the one I went with was OPI‘s new line called Axxium. I went this route because I’m slightly psychotic about my fingers matching my toes exactly, and since the other lines don’t have regular polishes to match each of their colors, I went with OPI.

Review of the color:

This color you see pictured is called “Lucerne-tainly Look Marvelous,” and you can get it by way of their regular polish – it’s part of the Swiss Collection – or their new gel nail polish, Axxium. A win-win for me because I can use the gel for my hands and the regular for my toes. Now, I must preface this by saying that I’ve never been a fan of sparkly nail colors in the past; this color, however, I love. I can do glitter as long it’s not a slight shimmer, or worse, frost. That would be gross.

It’s full-on glitter, and full-on perfect for New Year’s Eve. There is also a gold glitter version called “Glitzerland” for any of you who are going for the gold via your accessories this Friday.

Review of OPI Axxium:

I had this done one week ago, and so far, so good. It’s supposed to last for up to 3 weeks, and I’m not even close to one sign of a chip. I have heard some complaints that the color lifts on some people, so we’ll see if I run into that problem. I will be back with a full update after my 3 weeks is up, and I’ll also be trying the other brand my salon carries, so be on the lookout for that.

The cost (at my salon) was $30. If this lasts the full 3 weeks, it’s a total bargain – not to mention the time you’re saving for weekly manicures. It does take more time to do the gel – it took about 45 minutes start to finish for me – and you also need to soak it off when you get it re-done. You can, however, soak off while getting a pedicure.

I think the idea of a polish that lasts for 2-3 weeks is absolutely brilliant, especially for things like vacations, or better yet – busy schedules. Clearly the only negative I can think of so far would be for those who like to change their color frequently, which is the first thing my manicurist said to me. I may have been one to get bored from week to week in the past, so we’ll see if I can make the switch to a one-color kind of gal. At least for a few weeks, that is.

the chanel khaki nail.

Thank you, Chanel.

Thank you for creating the nail polish color I’ve been dreaming about.

You see, about a month ago I tried this new color at the nail salon. Or, an old color. A very old color.

Cup-A-Cawfee by OPI. Never heard of it? I’m not surprised – it’s from 2000.  And wouldn’t you know, it was my favorite color ever. Obsessed. I made my girl at the nail salon hide the bottle so I could finish it off… Not that anyone would have used it. It was old. And gloppy. And hidden away among the mish-mashed polishes that no one ever looks at.

Enter the discovery of the new Chanel Khaki Collection.

Half of me was ridiculously excited; the other half felt like my brilliant idea of a creamy, toffee-like deep nude nail polish had been ripped off.

It’s okay, I decided in the end. I’m glad Peter Phillips and I are on the same page.

The Khaki Brun is the color I’ve been fantasizing about, and I’m also loving the perfectly mossy green Khaki Vert. Which one do YOU prefer? Or were you more excited about the ubiquitous Jade color that came out of last year’s Fashion’s Night Out?

tales from the drugstore.

One of my favorite things to do is aimlessly wander the aisles of a good Target, CVS, or any other drugstore.

I especially enjoy it when I’m not dealing with any sort of time constraint (or any nagging boyfriend asking me what the hell is taking so long, for that matter).

{If you don’t know what I mean by a “good”  Target or CVS, then chances are you don’t share my same obsession here. Which is okay. This actually makes me the strange one, not you}

Either way, I thought it would be fun to share with you everything I buy when I go on these miniature shopping sprees. Why? Well for one, because maybe you’ve also been pondering the same purchase or heard something about the same product, and this way – I can do the dirty work for you. And if not, maybe you will discover something new {and wallet-friendly} that makes life just a little bit better/easier/happier. For each product, I will give a score of one to five cupcakes based on my experience with it, along with a little write-up on why I did or didn’t like it. If you have any questions, I will be more than happy to answer them. And if you have any drugstore products you’re curious about trying, let me know – maybe I will try it out for you!

Yes to Tomatoes Facial Hydrating Lotion for Oily/Combination Skin

I have purchased this lotion before, and I love it. Lately I’ve been into all-natural products when it comes to moisturizers or anything that I put directly on my face.  Just one pump does the trick, it absorbs quickly, and it has a smell that reminds me of something from childhood. It didn’t break me out at all, and the tomatoes are supposed to be a calming agent to the skin. I like.

Revlon ColorBurst Lipstick in Coral

I can’t even tell you how obsessed I am with this lipstick. I’ve been searching far and wide for this exact color  for months, and then I end up randomly finding this one at Walgreens. It is the perfect orangey-red color, and it looks so amazing with a tan and mascara. TDF.

TRESemme Fresh Start Dry Shampoo

As a huge fan of dry shampoos and hair powders (and clearly a fan of skipping washes as much as possible), I was excited to see what I know as the first drugstore brand to carry one. Unfortunately, I will be sticking with my Oscar Blandi version. This one just made my roots look more greasy.

Almay Hypo-Allergenic Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover Pads

For a while I was using those pre-moistened facial wipes for my entire face and eyes before using my cleanser, but I started to feel like it was a bit of a waste for days when I’m not wearing a lot of makeup. So, I tried these pads for the eyes. I like them as a whole, but they do sting my sensitive eyes just a bit.

Aquaphor Healing Ointment 2-Pack

I’m already a huge fan of this stuff, so this was just a restock. Love to keep these little tubes  EVERYWHERE.

Maybelline Shine Sensational Lip Gloss in Peach Sorbet

This is basically Lancome’s Juicy Tube for a fraction of the cost. It smells just like peaches, and gives plenty of shine. I threw it in my beach bag just so I’ll always have something with me.

CoverGirl Outlast Lipstain in Wild Berry Wink

Here’s another product I’ve been seeing everywhere and dying to try: lipstains, which are like felt-tipped markers for your lips. I like the idea in theory, but I can also be very indecisive; there are a lot of days when I do a bright lip only to change my mind and immediately wipe it off – and you can’t really do that with this stuff. It really does, well, stain. This color I bought looked more berry-like in the package, but when I put it on, it looked more like a red. You also have to be very careful to line your lips with it just right – imagine using a Sharpe to draw on your mouth. Mistakes are not welcome.

Maybelline Define-A-Lash Volume Mascara

As you all may have figured out by now, I like to buy my mascara from the drugstore (for more on this theory, click here). I have mixed feelings about this one; I like how it goes on – my lashes always clump, and this goes on pretty smoothly – but I feel like it tends to flake off during the day. I don’t usually like waterproof mascara because I feel like it’s annoying to take off, but I may break down and try this one.

Have you used any of these products before? Any thoughts/comments/suggestions? I’d love to know!

put your best {face} forward.

A couple of weeks ago when I wrote about all of the beauty products I can’t live without, so many items in the make-up category came to mind that I figured it best to give them their very own post.

  1. Make Up For Ever Eyeshadow in Mat Black – This is my go-to black eyeshadow for dramatic smokey eyes. It’s totally matte, which I’ve been really into lately, and it blends really well.
  2. Make Up For Ever HD Invisible Cover Foundation – I used to be a big fan of Chanel foundations, but this stuff has totally crossed me over. It has great coverage but doesn’t feel heavy at all, and just has the perfect finish. For daytime, I usually just use a tinted moisturizer and then dab a tiny bit of this over any problem areas. It’s that good! I rarely wear concealer, and believe me – my skin is far from perfect.
  3. Make Up For Ever HD Microfinish Powder – This is an invisible powder to set your foundation. I don’t normally use it during the day, because I like the natural, dewy look of the foundation on its own – but if you’re going out and want everything to really last, this stuff works wonders.
  4. Dior Addict Lip Polish Radiance Expert in Sheer Beige – Every girl needs to own a perfect nude lip gloss. You can add it to any lipstick to give it some shine or tone down the color a bit, and of course – it’s beautiful on its own. I really like the texture of this gloss in particular.
  5. Yves Saint Laurent Touche Éclat – I’m pretty sure everyone already knows about this little magic wand, but just in case – here it is. It’s so much more than a concealer – it’s a miracle product that makes you look like you’re totally rested and rejuvenated when you’re, well, not. My only complaint is that because it’s so popular, they are sometimes out of my color – so in case that happens to you, Chanel makes a similar one that’s just as good.
  6. Lorac TANtalizer Baked Matte Satin Bronzer – Another thing you should probably know about me {if you don’t already} is that I am addicted to bronzer. But you have to be careful here – the color has to be right, or it won’t look natural. I know I’m doing good when people keep telling me, “You look so tan!” and I know I haven’t been in the sun for weeks (which is also a product of my favorite fake-bake product I wrote about here). I love this bronzer because the color is perfect – not too dark, but still shows up on me when I do have a tan. It also goes on smoothly, is made out of minerals {love}, and even has an SPF built right in. I apply it with a big fluffy Kevin Aucoin brush lightly across my forehead, down my temples and through to my cheekbones, and then a little on my nose, chin, and neck/décolletage area. So, basically everywhere.
  7. Nars Blush in Amour – I never used to wear blush. Like, at all. I remember when everyone raved about Orgasm – I went out and bought it, was super excited about it – but, nothing. As in, it disappeared right onto my skin. For all of you fair-skinned beauties out there, I’m sure it’s gorg – but for me, I needed something with a little more pigment. And that’s when I found Amour. This color is like a deep peachy-pink, and it’s absolutely gorgeous. But be careful, because a little goes a long way. I definitely don’t use it everyday, but for a night out or other occasion I just use a tiny bit of this blush right on the apples of the cheeks, after I apply my bronzer.
  8. Chanel Les Quatres Ombres de Chanel Quadra Eye Shadow – Another staple in the world of cosmetics is your neutral/brown/beige eye shadows. I love Chanel for eye shadow, and every season they come out with a new set of colors that I think I have to have. They’re a little pricey, but I think it’s worth the splurge when you’re getting a neutral palette that you’ll get seriously mileage out of. Love this set of colors, called Kaska Beige.
  9. YSL Golden Gloss Shimmering Lip Gloss in Golden Petal – I’m also a self-professed lip gloss addict. Maybe moreso than bronzer, because with bronzer I {generally} only buy and use one at a time. Not so with lip gloss. Lip gloss is just one of those little purchases that feels so good to buy – I mean, who hasn’t bought a sparkly new lip gloss and felt instantly better on a bad day? Sparkly is exactly what this one is, and it’s another type of gloss that I think a girl should always have on hand. This one is the perfect shade of shimmering pinky-gold.
  10. Revlon Matte Lipstick in Nude Attitude – One of my new favorite things to do is buy lipsticks and glosses at the drugstore. This is pretty much the only thing (along with mascara) that I’ll buy at my local CVS, because when it comes to things like foundations and eye shadows, you’re getting into blending issues – and I think high-quality is important there. But lipsticks and glosses are something you can have fun with. I bought this to wear for a – shocker, I know – nude lip. I happen to have naturally darker lips, so when I apply my nude gloss on its own, it’s pretty but doesn’t make much of a statement. When I want a super-nude, more dramatic look {paired perfectly with a smokey black eye} I apply this lipstick under my gloss.
  11. Stila Sheer-Tinted Moisturizer SPF 30 Oil Free – This is one of the best tinted moisturizers I’ve used, because it has great coverage – but still feels so much lighter and more natural than foundation. I love this for beach days, because the SPF is high and lasts me longer than the usual 15. I also have one by Lorac that I love, which feels even lighter but does have less coverage.
  12. Smashbox Cream Eye Liner in Caviar – Save for the occasional smokey eye, I normally don’t wear eye shadow. I’m much more of an eyeliner kind of gal. I’ve been using this one for years; it comes in a little pot and you apply it with a tiny brush. I’ve also used  Bobbi Brown’s similar gel version, which lasts longer, but dries out more quickly. This one is creamy, but has surprisingly good staying power.
  13. Max Factor Volume Couture Mascara – I’m really not sure why I’m even mentioning this mascara, because I’m pretty sure it’s discontinued. I do, for the most part, prefer to buy mascara from the drugstore because to me, they dry out quickly whether you’re spending a lot or a little – and since I like them fresh and new, it’s best to spend less and buy more often. That, and I’ve used virtually every popular high-end mascara and I don’t find them to be any better. This is partly due to my strange eyelashes – they’re super-long, but straight – and when I apply mascara they tend to get very spidery and gross, so I’m ultra picky. (Yes, I do also curl them with a Shu Uemera). At one point I also loved Clinique’s Full Potential mascara, and I think that’s gone now, too. Maybe you should think twice about telling me which one you like, because I’m starting to see a pattern here…In any case, right now I’m using all kinds of mini versions that come in the  LashStash Mascara Deluxe Sampler I got at Sephora. So, wish me luck – maybe I’ll find a new one to curse into discontinuity I love.
  14. Cover FX Powder FX Mineral Powder Foundation – I’m not a compact person, per se – but I do like to carry one in my purse so that I can do touch-ups when I’m out and about. Living in South Florida, the humidity doesn’t allow any foundation to be very long-lasting, so it’s kind of necessary. I like this one because it’s made out of minerals, but doesn’t make my skin all ashy-looking the way other mineral-based products do. The coverage is also excellent – but there is a lot of it, so if you’re looking for something lighter, you may want to go with a basic pressed powder.
  15. Chanel AQUALUMIÈRE GLOSS in Party Red – From time to time, you may catch me wearing an all-out red lip. I think it’s fun to switch things up once in a while, and there’s nothing more glamorous than red. I do, however, understand that not everyone can pull it off (or at least you may not feel like you can – I bet you’d totally own it, if you tried). The good news is – this lip gloss is the perfect way to sort of dip your toes into the trend, without jumping in head-first. It’s red, but sheer – so the more red you want it, the more layers you add. I like to use it both on its own and on top of red lipstick (love MAC’s Russian Red). This gloss also has such a perfect texture – it’s literally the smoothest gloss I’ve ever used. And it is made in lots of other gorgeous colors, if red’s just not.your.thing.
  16. Make Up For Ever Aqua Eyes Eyeliner in Mat Black – Although I usually prefer to use the eyeliner that comes in a pot, there are just certain times when you need a pencil. I love these pencils – they stay on better than any others I’ve tried, and they’re made in all the colors in the rainbow. I also have a navy blue and a green one, which I love.

So, I’ve shown you mine – will you show me yours? What products are forever in your make-up bag?

{Sidenote: I worked as a make-up artist during the summers in college, so I know a few things. If you ever have any questions about products or how to apply them, give me a try – I’d love to help!}

product survival kit.

Food, water, shelter, eye cream.

Well, not really. Still – there are a few beauty products that I at least feel like I can’t live without. Here is a compilation of what I am currently obsessing over:

  1. Dove Intensive Repair Daily Treatment Conditioner – I am super picky when it comes to conditioner; I think I have tried hundreds of them, and even the most highly recommended formulas usually don’t satisfy me. This is one of the best I’ve found (from either the drugstore or higher-end brands) and leaves my hair totally soft and silky. And I like that it’s cheaper because I like to use A LOT of conditioner on my hair.
  2. Nailtiques Formula 2 Plus – When I say this stuff has *completely* changed my nails, I’m not exaggerating. I used to have the worst nails: super thin and always peeling. Since I’ve started using this, my weekly manicures aren’t even a waste anymore because they actually last! Well, a few days, at least.
  3. L’Oréal Professionnel Vitamino Color Shampoo – I’ve tried tons of different shampoos but I always go back to this one. Usually color-safe shampoos aren’t as moisturizing as I’d like them to be, but this one does the job right.
  4. Dr. Brandt Pores No More Pore Refiner – This is what I use in place of make-up primer. I have extra-big pores and this stuff makes them pretty much disappear. It also controls oil and makes your skin super smooth – and ready for make-up.
  5. Neutrogena MicroMist Tanning – Ok, this product, I definitely can’t live without. Ever since my fabulous hair stylist told me about it, I’ve been using it compulsively – and it WORKS. Better than any self-tanner I’ve ever used. It’s a super-fine mist that you spray over your whole body – you can hold it upside down and do your whole backside and all. It’s really light so it doesn’t streak or need to be rubbed in, dries pretty much immediately, and it doesn’t even have that awful scent that usually keeps me very far away from any type of self-tanner. It’s so easy, cheap, and fast, and I use it anytime I have an event. I’ve told pretty much anyone who will listen about this stuff, and now they all swear by it, too. So – GO.BUY.IT.NOW. You can thank me later.
  6. Aquaphor Healing Ointment – I have a giant tub of this next to my bed, and I keep the little travel-sized tubes all over the place. It’s like Vaseline but better, and I don’t know where my lips would be without it. Put it anywhere you need some extra moisture-lovin’ – your elbows, eyelids, etc.
  7. Moroccan Oil Intense Hydrating Mask – I know, I know. I just posted about Moroccan Oil. Still, I couldn’t bring myself to put together a list of my product essentials without including it. If you didn’t see the post, read about it here.
  8. Kiehl’s Unusually Rich – But Not Greasy At All – Hand Cream – I’m a big hand cream fanatic, and the SPF in this one is a must (your hands are, afterall, one of the first body parts to show your age). I love how it moisturizes a ton, but soaks right in and doesn’t feel greasy in the least.
  9. Olay Regenerist Microdermabrasion & Peel System – A while ago I went on a serious hunt to find the best at-home microderm kit. I went into the matrix of Sephora reviews (as well as other sites) and asked around, and this one came out on top (extra points because my dermatologist told me he uses it himself). I’ve been super happy with it – I use it in the shower once a week, and I always notice a difference in my skin. It’s softer, smoother, and decidely more glowy.
  10. Clinique Moisture Surge Extended Thirst Relief – I am positively addicted to this moisturizer genius all-over miracle product. It doesn’t have any SPF in it, but does anyone else hate putting sunscreen on to go to bed? {I do.} This gel-based goodness moisturizes SO much, yet it sinks in so fast – it’s like a drink for your skin. You can also apply it over make-up, under make-up, with another (SPF) moisturizer, on your sunburnt shoulders, whatever. Brilliant.
  11. Boscia Enlivening Amino-AG Eye Treatment – Please. I hope everyone reading this is already using some type of an eye cream. SO.IMPORTANT. This is one of those multi-tasking “all-in-one” eye creams: it helps with puffiness, fine lines, and dark circles. It’s one of the only eye creams that leaves my eyes feeling dewy and truly moisturized, plus it has all of those très important antioxidants, vitamins, and amino acids to help fight aging.
  12. Olay Daily Facials Express Wet Cleansing Cloths – Anyone who has come home after a late night and gone to sleep with a full-face of makeup probably has since learned of these, and if not, well – you need to know. I truly do not remember what life was like before these existed {it was likely full of dirty pillowcases and lots of morning breakouts}. I also use it to take off my eye make-up and (extra layers of) bronzer everyday before washing my face. Loves it.

What am I missing, pretties? Anything you obsess over that we all need to know about?

join the cult.

You may or may not have heard about Moroccan Oil, and if not, you need to hear about it.

It’s cult-like followers say it fights frizz, adds shine, and makes hair noticeably softer without weighing hair down or making it greasy. A bold statement, yes – but it totally delivers.

I use the Oil Treatment religiously. Yes, it’s a little pricey (about $40 a bottle) but it lasts you a while, because a little goes a long way. Just apply a dime-sized amount (I have a ton of hair so I use a little more) to damp hair, concentrating it on the ends, and blow-dry or air-dry or whatever-dry like you normally would. They also say it’s great for flat-ironing – but I have to tell you – since I’ve started using this stuff, I haven’t even needed a flat-iron.

I also use the Intense Hydrating Mask once every week or two, and I am IN.LOVE. If you’re a person who regularly heat-styles your hair (like I think most of us are), a weekly deep conditioning treatment is a must. I’ve used Kérastase, René Furterer, and a lot of great masks – and this one is by far my fave. I just wash my hair, then towel-dry it and apply. I have naturally wavy hair, so I can get away with letting it air-dry in my hair and then getting on with my day. Especially on, let’s say, a beach day – that way your hair stays protected AND the heat of the sun helps the product really soak in. {Though you can totally just leave it in for 20 minutes or so and rinse, like a normal person.}

The smell alone is reason enough to buy it.

What are the hair products that you can’t live without? And – I’ve been itching to try the Moroccan Oil Glimmer Shine Spray. Anyone out there tried it? What about any of their other products?

jade is the new black.

Obsession of the week season.

DSC01873.JPG

I have been rocking this nail polish for 3 mani-pedi’s in a row. It is such a perfect shade of jade, like a deep greenish-turquoise that changes color depending on the light. It kind of reminds me of Essie Greenport, an aqua shade I obsessively wore last year, only it’s darker and definitely more green.

It’s from the new Hong Kong Collection by OPI.

If I can stop myself from doing the jade again, next time I will try the blue one (Suzi Says Feng Shui). I also love the purplish-magenta color (Dim Sum Plum).

And just when I thought it couldn’t get any better, I discover these beyond FAB matching Dell laptop shells.

Matching your nails to your laptop? Yes, please!

I’ve been in the market for a netbook lately so that I can blog and surf the web when I’m on the go. I’m a pretty devoted Mac girl, but Mac doesn’t seem to be making a netbook anytime soon – and these beautiful little babies have me considering giving a PC a chance.

Do you like the new colors? And how *genius* are these laptops?
