Archives For Fashion

I have a new obsession, and if my bank account has to pay, then so do you. The good news is, you don’t have to pay a lot, because you can find some serious bargains on this site. The bad news is, you’ll probably want to buy, like, everything. Which adds up to – well, I haven’t done the math or anything, but I’m pretty sure it’s over our budget.

Is everyone out there aware of my penchant for shopping online? … Hi. I’m addicted. No bigs.

I have extremely limited time, so going on actual shopping trips is pretty much out of the question. I truly cannot remember the last time I did that. Online is fast and easy and I don’t have to try anything on in a store (mega-triple-insanity bonus points for this lazy lady). I can try it on when it comes to my house and send it back (read: send Daniel with the package to the UPS store, because he is the EFF-ing best) if I don’t like it. Which brings me to my next point: Free shipping and returns is crucial. It’s part of what has addicted me to places like this and this and it’s also why the door-people of my building who receive packages on my behalf think I’m a total nut.

The only downside with online shopping is that you have to plan in advance. Nothing to wear for tomorrow night’s event? Not happening online, unless you’re willing to pay some outrageous shipping charges, which clearly I am not, so … that’s that. Good thing I happen to be a planner, and even better that I happen to frequently discover sites like this one – my latest obsession, BaubleBar.

Inexpensive jewelry is a beautiful thing in that you can easily update what’s already going on in your wardrobe without spending a fortune. I happen to love statement pieces even moreso, because I’m not a person who wears a lot of jewelry, like, at all. My Cartier pretend-wedding ring and diamond studs and maybe the watch I spoke of above is all you’re getting during the week – but on the weekend, I like to throw on a little something. I’m a firm believer in the “less is more” philosophy in terms of clothing as well – for the most part, I dress simply. I’d rather wear a pair of great jeans, a simple white tee, sickening platforms, and one piece of bling and call it a day. Especially when I’m entertaining – there’s just no time for frills. There is, however, time for throwing on a killer necklace with an easy cotton dress. And truthfully, simple is what I feel sexiest in.

And inexpensive jewelry online? Well, it just makes sense. All that talk of trying on and returning if you’re not a fan? Not likely. It’s still a bonus to have free returns as an option, just in case what you’re seeing in person isn’t what you thought it’d be, but for the most part – it all fits! It’s a no-brainer for gift-giving, too.

Apparently, this new object of my affection has been all over the media, on the Today Show, People StyleWatch, etc. Where I’ve been hiding, I don’t know, but I’m so glad I stumbled on it via these earrings on Who What Wear this morning.

A run-down of what I’m loving + purchasing:

fluoro necklace, $38

SOLD! This was apparently seen on the Today Show. Hot pink/fuchsia is definitely big right now, and I like the simple shape of this. They have a similar necklace in a gorgeous, bright shade of blue, but I’ve been looking to satisfy my craving for something pink and this did it.

octagon initial bracelet, $50

SOLD! Couldn’t resist this. Bought it in this exact color combination – I’ve been loving this neon color for years now even though it’s just becoming popular, with the letter “D” for my Daniel. I’ll wear it on the same wrist as my chunky gold Michael Kors watch. Oh, and bonus points for coming in three different sizes – perhaps this one won’t slide off my freakishly small wrists.

monogram necklace, $72

This one comes in a lot of colors; I’m digging the orange – obsessing over everything tangerine right now, the turquoise, and the black. I think it’s a little pricey for what it is, and maybe a little bit too big, but I still love the idea.

The word on the street is that some of you – I won’t name names – have been craving fashion. I used to do these posts all the time, and lately they’ve sort of fallen to the wayside. Largely because…well, I’m obsessed with food. I have limited time, and I cook so much that I constantly have recipes backed up to share with you, so that’s the reason. But you must know – I die for fashion. Or better yet, I live for fashion. And what better time than fall to get back into the swing of things?  So, I’ve taken the time to weed out my favorite trends for fall this year. I hope you enjoy.

Let me begin by saying that I, for one, am happy that it’s not quite time to put away the lace, the brights, maxi skirts, the color red (please see the always-stunning Blake Lively to the right, in Marchesa, showing off one of my favorite looks of the collection), or the 70s – though the 60s are competing for the limelight in a big way, and I’m not arguing with that, either.

I’ve been into polka dots for a hot minute now, the bigger the better, and I’m liking the sweater dress in a maxi shape, though much of what I saw was maxi skirts with hugh, chunky knits on top – which is a look that, for me, may or may not be wearable…I haven’t yet decided. I’m a sucker for legs, whether it’s someone else’s or showing my own, so it’s no surprise that I loved the super-high slits seen pretty much everywhere. Plaid is lingering, but this time playing up on the Tartan aspect – seen many places, but the red and blue pattern done at Thakoon is one of the most memorable. Choker necklaces? A nod to the 90s, and perhaps one of the only trends from that era I’d like to see again, because this time it’s being done right.

timeless.

April 29, 2011 — 2 Comments

She’s being compared to Grace Kelly, who was perhaps the most timelessly beautiful woman in history. It’s undoubtedly a lot to live up to – but surely Kate’s used to that, following in the footsteps of Princess Diana.

My grandmother closely resembled Grace Kelly, so I have a special place in my heart for her. I truly think she is the epitome of timeless elegance.

I absolutely love Kate’s dress – it couldn’t be more perfect. Do I think her choice was inspired by Grace Kelly? That’s hard to say for sure, because the most notable similarities I see are the long sleeves, the lace, and the super-cinched waist. Apparently they both went for drama in the trains without being excessive, and shorter veils. Kate’s dress was designed by Alexander McQueen’s Sarah Burton, and while it may have been partially inspired by Grace Kelly, there’s also a good chance they turned out to be similar by coincidence. Kate is going to be our generation’s timeless beauty, after all – and she’s already proved she’s got the type of classic beauty and personal style to stand the test of time.

What do YOU think? About the dress, the wedding, the bride – all of the above!

I secretly want to go buy a box of crayons right now. Not just any box of crayons – one of those giant boxes, with like 199 different colors.

Cerulean blue, anyone? Purple pizazz, or how about some jungle green? Those were some of my favorite Crayola colors, and I just had a field day onWikipedia looking at them all. Remember the scented crayons, or the ones with the silver swirls? Apparently they made glitter crayons, which I regretfully missed out on. I wonder if kids still go crazy for crayons the way I used to.

Now, we can get our Crayola fix through another avenue: fashion. Colorblocking and brights are obvious trends of the season, and now skinny jeans in super-saturated hues are having a moment. I’d pair them with a simple white tee and platforms in a contrasting shocking color – and you could certainly mix and match with other patterns and shades if you’re feeling bold.

Obviously I’m dying over the red, because I’m a sucker for anything in my favorite color – but I’m also loving the yellow, the green…the orange is outrageous! And the great part is, they’re coming in at a price-point for everyone: Delia’s version, shown here in purple, is currently on sale for less than $20!

Are you feeling the Crayola-denim vibe – and, more importantly, what was YOUR favorite crayon?

Oh, Fantasy Friday, how I’ve missed you.

Seriously – it’s been too long. I’ve had this insane collection from Hermès sitting on the back-burner forever, and it’s finally time to bring it out, wipe the dust off, and let it shine in its glory.

I know, I know… If you’re into fashion, you’re likely already well-into the fall collections by now, but sometimes I like to mix it up and show you things that apply to the current season. This collection was one of my absolute favorites of the season, if not my number one.

I can’t decide what I love more: the hats, the leather, the neutral color palette (with hits of the signature Hermès orange, of course), or the equestrian/dominatrix vibe. It’s luxe, but totally edgy. The crazy-clean, hard lines and magnetic tailoring are offset by flowing, gauzy fabrics and draping. I’ve been obsessing over riding boots for a while now, and this collection highlights them in the most tremendous way.

It’s not easy to make sexy look so elegant – and that’s exactly what Jean Paul Gaultier has done with this collection.

What do you think, dolls? Are YOU ready to hit the horse trails?

Christmas cards. Some people love ‘em, some people hate ‘em.

Personally, I like for the Christmas cards I receive to include a photo. Regular cards do nothing for me. Yes, I get it that the thought is nice, but let’s face it – no one keeps them. They’re usually thrown right in the trash once the new year rolls in. Unless, that is, there’s a photo. The photo usually hangs around longer, maybe on your fridge, maybe in your office – for us, the photos sit on the bar area on our kitchen counter for months to come.

That’s right – I like Christmas cards with photos. Family photos are totally cool in my book, and further – I think they are pretty  imperative if you have growing children. What’s not super-cool in my book? When a couple has their photo taken for a Christmas card. Believe me – I’m just as vain as the next person, and there’s nothing more I love than a great photo of Daniel and I…but the thought of us sending out a Christmas card capturing one of our precious moments – and believe me, there are plenty of them – makes me gag.

So, I suppose I don’t need to tell you not to hold your breath for one of those this year. I’ll be saving that for the day we have a beautiful family of our own – because in my book, that’s something worth showing off. And when that day arrives, I’d love to do something over-the-top like the portrait the Kardashian’s had taken this year. I love that they switch up the theme each year, and I am particularly smitten with the dramatic vibe of this super-glam edition. I love the solemn faces, and of course – I’m positively dying over the fashion. I mean, just look at little Mason – I die.

I’m also dying to know what YOU think about Christmas cards. Are you into the photos, or would you rather go without altogether? Are you obsessing over this glam-ed out photo op from the Karsdashian clan, or is it a little too haute for the holidays?

Suddenly I’m craving all things furry, fringed, flared, and booted. Shopbop’s latest lookbook – aptly named “The Outlaws” – has me looking at some once deemed cowgirl-esque pieces in a whole new light. The combination of the return of the super-flare with the grunge of the fringe and boots, all topped off with the luxe effect from the fur is so unexpected and feels fresher than ever. Not to mention this new spin on the fedora – seemingly crossed with a wide-brimmed sun hat – it’s all sure to make you do a double take.

It was this look that caught my eye first. The other day I heard that flares are coming back with a vengeance, and this is all the proof I need. I don’t have many occasions to wear this getup, but I’d still kill for this metallic tweed jacket and extra-wide flare pants. The camel fringe bag adds the perfect rebellious touch.

Here they are again – these are super-flares for sure.  Sold out already! You saw it here first. Loving this comeback. And sneaking into the mix is this vest – at $65, it’s a non-fantasy indulgence to say the least.

These pants are perfection, but I think the fur hood is what makes this look so on target. I love the over-sized fullness framing the face – it puts the now seemingly boring fur vest sitting in my closet to shame.

I’m really into maxi skirts right now, and I think the fringe takes this one over-the-top. The fur and the boots complete the look.

I’m a self-proclaimed fedora-hater, but so positively in love with this hat. Wider than the first one pictured above, this hat makes a serious statement. And I’m loving the idea of a “sun hat” at night.

Can YOU hop on board with this trend, lovelies? Or is it all a little too much for your tastes?

By now, I think most of us are aware of the benefits of the high/low mix. You know the drill – certain items are worth the splurge, and will serve as the backbone of your wardrobe for years to come, while others are meant to be purchased on the cheap. So, a Chanel bag is an investment you will have for the rest of your life – but do you really need a t-shirt that costs over $200? Of course you don’t!

This is by no means anything new, but I think it can be hard to decipher which items merit a substantial purchase and which pieces are things we could stand to save a penny or two on. Because the holiday season has quickly come upon us and I know we could all benefit from a party dress {or three} on the cheap, let’s talk money-savers.

Basics are an easy argument here; they get washed, they get old, and you can throw them out and replace them when they get old without feeling guilty about it. There’s nothing worse than spending $50+ on a Theory t-shirt only for it to develop those tiny little holes after one trip through the washing machine. But – why buy a dress on the cheap, you wonder? Simple. We’ve all been there before:  You wear something to an event, like a wedding, get photographed in it a bajillion times, and suddenly your latest sequined Haute Hippie number feels as dated as an 80s prom getup. You’re over it. When you’re spending less than $30 on a dress, you can wear it once and not feel bad about it. That’s what it was designed for. The same goes for the anything and everything trendy – you can have your fun with it all in the here and now, and when it’s over, it’s over. No guilt, and no looking back. Onto the next.

I have a few sources that I typically like to start with when I’m looking for a particular item or trend for less. The first stop? Forever 21.

If the idea of this place wigs you out, you’re not alone. I know that walking in to this crazy store can be a bit overwhelming. It’s always huge, crowded, and filled with what appears to be a bunch of junk. The thing I’ve learned about Forever is that hidden amongst all of that junk, there are always hidden gems. Always. A very good friend of mine is the one who we can thank for this lesson:  You’ve got to try things on. Have a bit of an imagination; some things don’t look so great on the hanger – but once they’re on, you’d be surprised. Ever since I’ve opened my mind up to this place, I swear I have found so many great items that *no one* ever believes I bought at Forever for less than the cost of a pedicure.

Another thing I’ve learned along the way? Shop online. You don’t have to deal with the crowds, and you can easily stock up on things that don’t require trying on like t-shirts and jewelry. I sometimes even nab pieces that really should be tried on, and they usually fit; if not, you can easily return them to your nearest store.

Things I like to buy from Forever 21:  basics like t-shirts, tanks, and leggings; dresses; tons of crazy costume jewelry; super-trendy pieces like metallic minis and sequined shorts.

ASOS has fast become my absolute favorite source for both basics and dresses for events. I have purchased several dresses for weddings (one being an asymmetrical velvet black one-shoulder dress, and another being a taupe one-shoulder long gown) for under $100 – some even under $75! I have heard ASOS be referred to as the British version of Forever 21, but I find the quality to be far-superior. They recently launched their US site, featuring free shipping and free returns, which is another reason I’m such a big fan.

Things I like to buy from ASOS:  basics like t-shirts, tanks, and leggings; party dresses like this black feather-sleeved minidress; accessories, including both shoes and handbags.

Zara would likely be my #1 choice when it comes to trends on the cheap, if only they had an online component. I have found some of my favorite pieces from Zara – I particularly love getting jackets and blazers there, as well as shoes, tops…basically everything. I typically shy away from buying things requiring a great fit – like pants, jeans, or other bottoms – from Forever 21, but you can definitely count on those at Zara. My favorite pair of black pants ever is from Zara, and of course, fit is also important when it comes to jackets. Though slightly more expensive than Forever, it’s for good reason – everything is of higher quality.

Online Sale Sites like Gilt Groupe, Shop It To Me, and Shopping Notes

If you don’t know about Gilt Groupe already, perhaps I shouldn’t tell you about it. If you’re someone who always get carried away when you know you’re getting a deal – like me – then this is quite a dangerous site. It’s basically a sample sale of designer duds happening everyday at noon. If you aren’t already a member and think you can handle the daily temptation, you can score an invite here.

Shop It To Me, on the other hand, is just a congregation of all sales currently going on throughout the web. You choose your favorite designers and/or sites, let them know your sizes, and they send you a daily email with items – all on sale – that match your criteria.

Shopping Notes is where you go when you’ve found the perfect item with the not-so-perfect price tag. You save the item to this site, and they notify you the moment it goes on sale. It’s kind of a no-brainer.

Other go-to sources include: American Apparel for all things t-shirt/tank/simple cotton dress-related, Topshop for more on-trend pieces like party dresses and accessories, Urban Outfitters for more dresses and tops, Gap for t-shirts {especially the super-soft ones from their GapBody line} and accessories like sequin totes and ballet flats, J. Crew for jewelry – though it’s not always on the cheap side,  Old Navy for things like winter coats and cardigans, BB Dakota for items like leather jackets at a much lower price-point, Madewell for basics like t-shirts and cardigans, Target and Wal-Mart for certain items like sweatpants {just got a great pair of baggy sweats in the boys’ department at Target} and love the Norma Kamali line at Wal-Mart, and of course H&M {if you’re lucky enough to have one near you, as they very-unfortunately do not have an online component} for anything and everything.

Shoe sources: ALDO is literally my obsession when it comes to shoes on the cheap – it’s the first place I look when I’m looking for a new trend or style, Baker’s comes in at a close second – my favorite YSL look-a-likes come from there, Steve Madden for basic pumps {and I especially like the Steven brand also carried on the site}, Zappos for when you need something *super* quick – literally, your shoes will be delivered the next day, and Jessica Simpson for great platforms and boots.

Any other favorite ways to save that I’ve missed? I’d love to know!

Sweaters and snowflakes and ski-bunnies. Oh my.

With the weather supposedly dropping into the 50s for the first time in South Florida this weekend, I figured this was the perfect time to share with you this dreamy collection via D&G I’ve been fantasizing over all season long.

I’ve never been one to go for those fair isle sweaters of the prepster variety, but this collection takes the old-school print and turns it into one of the most vibrant and cohesive themes for a fashion show I’ve ever seen. What they’ve done with the prints and the silhouettes is nothing short of brilliant, and I’m obsessing over every ounce of detail:  the fur, the layering, the over-sized goggles. Everything about it instantly transports me to some über-chic ski resort in Aspen, steamy mug of {spiked} cocoa in hand, with nothing to do but frolic from snow to fireplace.

With these kinds of clothes, I think I may skip the outdoors all together and instead play snow queen inside all day. Because somehow, D&G has made sweater-dressing even sexier than a bikini.

I think if I were a fashion designer, my clothes would look like those designed by my number one style icon.

And it’s not just because I find her to be the chicest, most glamorous woman ever to exist. It’s really about the clothes. They’re everything I could ever ask for. Perfectly simple and sleek, with just the right combination of classicism and edge.

We’re all familiar with her masterfully-created sheath dresses that give a new meaning to the word body-con, but this season she really kicked it up a notch. She took that impeccable fit and construction she does so well and added to it the most interesting twists and drapes. Of course, I loved her use of the color of the color of the season {it’s red, in case you’ve been hiding in a hole somewhere} and I was equally mesmerized by the addition of sparkles and shine to the line.

There’s no doubt she knows how to style a collection, but this one has to be one of my personal favorites. The shoes are everything. And I’m feeling those round sunnies in a very big way.

Does it get any sexier, classier, more eternally beautiful? Not in my book.
